1. How do I apply for a job?

2. How will I know what jobs I am qualified for and when to apply?

Whenever a position becomes available, the Human Resources Department will create an Employment Opportunity posting.  This posting will contain a brief job description, statement of minimum educational and experience requirements, and will include a description of any special qualifications which may be required.  Postings will be available for review on the city’s website.  Employment applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on the posted closing date unless otherwise specified.  Resumes cannot be substituted for this requirement but may accompany a completed employment application.

3. How do I file my application?

In order to ensure your application receives the attention it deserves, you will need to submit a separate application for each open position for which you wish to be considered through our online Applicant Tracking System (ATS).   It is very important you fill out the application completely, even if you attach a resume.  Do not state “see resume” when asked to describe your responsibilities, experience, and employment dates.  Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of the information you provide on the application itself.  Your resume will be reviewed for clarification purposes only.

4. What is important to know about completing an application?

6. Am I eligible to receive Veteran's preference?

Veteran's preference will be granted in accordance with Florida law to eligible veterans and spouses of veterans. Preference points will be awarded when copies of supporting documentation (DD-214 and/or proof of receipt of disability benefits) is provided at the time of application.

7. I missed the job closing date for a position. How can I be notified when a job opportunity becomes available at the City of Hollywood?

The City of Hollywood is looking for dynamic, talented, and enthusiastic people to join our team. We have a job interest card feature on our City of Hollywood Career Pages that will alert a candidate of a new job openings. This feature gives the candidate the opportunity to be notified for a position they are interested in and to submit an official employment application before the job closing date. The Job Interest Card is simple to complete. Once you have accessed the Job Interest Card, check off the job categories you are interested in, click “Subscribe” and then enter your contact information to begin receiving job opening notifications.

8. What happens after I apply for a job?

You will receive a confirmation message displayed on the screen immediately after you successfully complete your application. Due to the volume of applications, every candidate meeting the minimum qualifications cannot be guaranteed an interview and the screening process can take several weeks to complete.  Candidates are selected for an interview based on education and work experience most closely matching the requirements of the position and may be subject to an extensive selection process and screening program, which may include, but not be limited to, evaluation of training and experience, written test, oral test and performance test.

9. What kind of exam(s) will I be taking?

Depending on the position, the examination process may consist of one or any combination of the following: written exam, performance exam, education and experience evaluation, oral exam and/or other job related examinations. A passing grade is required on every examination. If a written and/ or performance test is required, it will be conducted by the Human Resources Office.

10. What happens after I take a test?

Applicants that pass will be scheduled for any additional testing or will be notified in writing of final score and position on the Civil Service Register. Applicants that fail will be notified in writing.

11. What if I need a special testing accommodation?

The City of Hollywood provides necessary reasonable accommodation in the examination process upon request to persons with disabilities. Please call us at 954.921.3216 upon submission of your application prior to any scheduled examination.

12. How long does the application and examination process take?

The length of time depends on the number of people who apply and the type of examination given.

13. Who conducts the selection for interviews?

The City’s objective is to hire the best person for the position. Human Resources recruits, screens, and tests applicants (when applicable) based upon requirements for the position in order to create a pool of eligible candidates for consideration. The supervisors or managers in the department where the vacancy actually exists then review this pool of candidates, evaluate each candidate’s qualifications for the particular job and select who they want to interview.

14. Does the City of Hollywood have any prerequisites to employment other than the essential functions and qualifications described by the job posting?

Yes.   After the hiring authority selects the top candidate for a position, the Human Resources Department will conduct a background investigation which will include employment, verification of education, driving history (for those positions requiring driving), criminal investigation, and other reports which may include information regarding character, work habits, performance and experience of past employment from previous employers.   Following a job offer, candidates may also be required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical, and drug screening.

15. If I previously completed an application, will I automatically be considered for other positions?

No. You must submit a separate application for each position in which you are interested in. Your application is evaluated on how well your qualification (training, education and experience) match the particular position you are applying for. 

When completing an application for the first time, you must create a profile in our career portal.  The information entered in your profile is saved and used for all future applications submitted.  

16. How Can I Volunteer with the City?

The City of Hollywood is happy to welcome valuable volunteers who play an important role in helping keep our community safe, vital and attractive. 17. I have incurred damage to myself or my property within the City of Hollywood – How do I file a claim for damages?

If the claim involves property damage due to an automobile accident, potholes, fence damage, golf balls, or tree limbs please call 855.474.5264 for instructions on how to file your claim.

Pursuant to F.S. Chapter 119, the City of Hollywood will not release:
 • Social Security Numbers
 • Personal Health Information
 • Confidential information without the appropriate legal releases
 • Or any other information exempt by law
