Do I have to evacuate if an evacuation order is issued for my area?: Evacuation orders are issued to protect residents from hazardous situations that may affect their area during an emergency. While you cannot legally be forced to leave your home, understand that you likely will be unable to depend on emergency crews such as police and fire rescue to assist you during a life-threatening situation. Conditions outside may not allow emergency units to assist you. So it is strongly recommended that you heed an evacuation order, if given.

1. How long should I expect to be self-sufficient during an emergency?: You should be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours, or three days, following a hurricane or any other serious emergency. This means you should have three days' worth of supplies for each member of your household and your pet(s).

3. How do I know if live in an evacuation zone?: The City of Hollywood has two evacuation zones. Zone A is comprised of the barrier island. Zone B includes all of Hollywood east of Federal Highway.

What is Alert Hollywood and how do I register to receive these alerts?: Alert Hollywood is a public emergency alert system used by the City of Hollywood to notify residents through phone calls, e-mails and text messages to mobile phones or text pagers of an emergency in the community such as a hurricane watch or warning, flash flood warning, tornado warning, serious police situations, and other critical events. The service is free to the public. Text message fees by your wireless carrier may apply depending on your mobile phone plan.

6. Do gas stations, supermarkets and other stores in Hollywood have backup generator capability?: Yes. Florida law requires gas stations located within a mile of an interstate or evacuation route to have backup generator capability. 7. I have a relative with special needs. What should I do to prepare them for an emergency?: Be sure to make appropriate arrangements for them. 8. Can I receive emergency alerts from the City of Hollywood?: Yes. The City of Hollywood encourages its residents to register for its Alert Hollywood alert system. Alert Hollywood notifies residents through phone calls, e-mails and text messages to mobile phones or text pagers of an emergency in the community such as a hurricane watch or warning, flash flood warning, tornado warning, serious police situations, and other critical events. Residents also are encouraged to sign up for NotifyMe alerts to receive important information about upcoming events, meetings, and ongoing situations in the City of Hollywood.

9. I have a pet. What can I do to ensure they are safe during an emergency?: Make sure you have enough food and water for them and you keep them indoors with you during an emergency. If you have to evacuate and would like to inquire about placing your pet in a pet-friendly shelter, please call the Humane Society of Broward County at 954.989.3977.

10. How can I become a member of the Hollywood Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)?: Contact Hollywood Emergency Management at 954.921.3053 for more information on joining CERT. In order to join CERT, you must be at least 18 years old, pass a background check, and be in good physical condition. CERT certification consists of a 20-hour training program conducted on-site.
