[ARCHIVED] Be Prepared for Hurricane Dorian

Hurricane Dorian

All City of Hollywood staff involved with Emergency Management and Public Safety are closely monitoring the track and development of Hurricane Dorian.  Preparations have taken place throughout the City for possible impacts from Dorian.  As of the National Hurricane Center's Sunday morning 5 AM Advisory, Hollywood is not in the forecast cone, but this does not mean the City will not feel the impacts of Dorian.  Hurricane Dorian is continuing west, but is still expected to turn to the north.  Due to the storm's current westward movement, a Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect from Golden Beach in northeast Miami-Dade County up to Deerfield Beach. That means tropical storm conditions (winds in excess of 39 mph and periods of heavy rain) are possible within the next 48 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend more than a 100 miles from the center of Dorian. Currently, the storm is forecast to be at its closest point to South Florida late Monday night/early Tuesday morning. Impacts may be felt as early as Monday morning.

Dorian is a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. Dorian is moving to the west at 8 mph toward the northwestern Bahamas where hurricane warnings have been issued. The storm has slowed its forward motion. The latest forecast track has Dorian turning toward the north off the coast of Florida and heading toward the Georgia/South Carolina coastal area. It is important that residents continue to monitor Dorian’s progress due to the storm’s erratic behavior during the past week. The forecast can change very quickly.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON SERVICES:

  • All sanitation collection (garbage, recycling, hard junk, brush) will be suspended on Monday, September 2nd.  WastePro, the City’s sanitation contractor, operated its normal collection schedule through Saturday, August 31st.  Due to anticipated inclement weather conditions caused by Hurricane Dorian, service will not take place on Monday. Residents are asked to secure their gray and blue garbage and recycling carts on their property. Keeping these carts from blowing around is not only a matter of safety, it also will assist the City in resuming collection services as quickly as possible after the storm passes.  It’s also very important that residents refrain from trimming trees or piling up excess yard waste or debris.  Any yard waste or hard junk must be secured and stored on your property. Regular collections will resume as soon as conditions permit.
  • Gather your hurricane supplies now if you have not already done so. During hurricane season residents should have three to five days’ worth of supplies, such as non-perishable food and water, for each person in your household.  Make sure you have any prescriptions filled and don't forget about supplies for your pets.
  • If conditions warrant, free parking will be provided for Hollywood residents on a first come, first served basis in the City's two downtown parking garages. The city's website will be updated if parking fees are waived.  Residents will need to provide identification with a Hollywood address.  All vehicles must be parking properly in a marked parking space.
  • In preparation for the storm, all floating docks at City boat launches have been removed.
  • Please plan for the possibility of tropical storm force winds by securing any outdoor items that could be blown around in the storm. Bring these items indoors or otherwise secure them as the storm approaches.

CLOSURE ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Per Broward County order all drawbridges in Broward County will begin the lockdown process at 12:00 noon on  Saturday, August 31. By 8:00 p.m. all drawbridges will be locked down until further notice.
  • Broward County Animal Care & Adoption shelter is closed to the public. In addition to tending to the animals at the shelter, staff will be preparing to receive donated supplies that will be utilized in an anticipated recovery effort. Animal Control will be available for priority cases.
  • All Broward County campgrounds, rental halls, and water parks are closed to the public.
  • All libraries are closed to the public until further notice. Book drops will be locked and late fees will not be charged during the emergency.
  • County auto tag offices that are normally open on Saturday are closed.
  • City-operated Community Centers, Sports Fields, the ArtsPark Visual Arts Center and studios, Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, Driftwood Pool and the Art & Culture Center are closed.
  • City's beach concessions to the public have been suspended until further notice.
  • Fuel sales at the Hollywood Marina have been suspended until further notice.
  • SunShuttle by Circuit is operating with a limited number of drivers and service will be suspended based on weather conditions as the storm approaches.
