[ARCHIVED] Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month Community Events

Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History chooses a national theme for Black History Month. The theme this year is “Black Migration.” In honor of this year’s theme, the City of Hollywood’s African American Advisory Council will host the following Black History Community Events. All are welcome to attend.

"Black Migration" Panel Discussion and Presentation on Tuesday, February 12th

A presentation and panel discussion by Dr. Tisa McGhee is taking place on Tuesday, February, 12th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Hollywood City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Boulevard. Dr, McGhee will lead the discussion on the migration patterns of American Americans within the United States and the immigration of Afro-Carribeans to the United States. Refreshments and networking in the City Hall 2nd floor lobby begins at 5:30 p.m.

3rd Annual “Talented 10th Poetry Slam” on Tuesday, February 26th

The City of Hollywood’s African American Advisory Council invites high school students to participate in a poetry/spoken word night at Hollywood City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Boulevard on Tuesday, February, 26th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Refreshments and networking in the City Hall 2nd floor lobby begins at 5:30 p.m.

Students are encouraged to write their poems based on the topic "Black Migrations – Movement of the People." Students will recite their poems during the event in front of the community audience. The first place winner will receive an “Apple Smart Watch", the second place winner will receive a “Samsung Smart Watch” and the third place winner will receive an “LG Smart Watch”.
