Come out and cheer on the Hollywood Police Department on Thursday, April 20th at 8:00 a.m. as HPD Officers proudly carry the Special Olympics Florida "Flame of Hope" torch north on Ocean Drive (A1A) from Hallandale Beach Boulevard to Sheridan Street. HPD will carry the torch through Hollywood as it makes its way north through Broward County on its way to the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida on May 19th.
Every year, the "Flame of Hope" has traversed Florida in an intrastate relay of simultaneous routes throughout the state, covering thousands of miles. The torch is carried by local and state law enforcement officers all the way to the Opening Ceremonies of Florida’s annual State Summer Games in Orlando.
The annual run began as the S.O.M.E. (Special Olympics Mileage Event) Run, when a handful of officers ran the flame throughout the state in an exhausting, non-stop run. The S.O.M.E. Run gained momentum as more and more law enforcement agencies throughout Florida became involved. The S.O.M.E. Run has evolved into the “Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Florida.”
