[ARCHIVED] Motorists Advised to Use Caution in East Hollywood due to Street Flooding Caused by Supermoon

Supermoon image

On Sunday evening the full moon will appear brighter than usual in the night sky. A “Supermoon” occurs when the moon is nearest to the earth (perigee) while it appears full. Sunday’s Supermoon will be the closest since 1948. For that reason, the National Weather Service has announced conditions will be conducive to tidal elevations and localized street flooding. Forecasts are calling for higher than normal tildes to begin this weekend, however impacts should be less than last month's King Tides.

The Department of Public Works has barricades on standby for possible deployment to impacted roadways. Auxiliary water pumps are currently deployed in flood prone areas in east Hollywood and are ready to assist with clearing street flooding. If necessary, the Hollywood Police Department will deploy electronic message boards to warn motorists of potential hazardous driving conditions. If motorists are traveling in areas impacted by tidal flooding, caution should be used and alternate routes should be sought.

The City is working on both short and long-term solutions to minimize the impacts of tidal flooding and just completed the first round of installation of flap gates in the stormwater system. Additionally, the City has a comprehensive program in place to clean, maintain and rehabilitate the stormwater infrastructure.
