The National Weather Service Miami is forecasting higher than normal tides (King Tides) along the southeast Florida coast from Friday, October 14 through Monday, October 17 due to a combination of the lunar cycle and elevated tide levels.
High tide is expected to be highest Saturday and Sunday, possibly resulting in minor street flooding along the barrier island and areas along the Intracoastal Waterway.
Tidal elevation is expected to be 2.9 feet to 3.2 feet above normal in Hollywood. The risk of localized street flooding along the coastal areas during high tide hours exists. If motorists are traveling in areas impacted by tidal flooding, caution should be used and alternate routes should be sought to avoid traveling on flooded streets.
The Hollywood Police Department and Department of Public Works will place barricades in areas where streets are flooded. Auxiliary water pumps have been deployed in flood prone areas in east Hollywood and portable pumps are ready for deployment should the City experience serious street flooding.
The City is working on both short and long-term solutions to minimize the impacts of tidal flooding and just completed the first round of installation of flap gates in the stormwater system. Additionally, a comprehensive program is in place to clean, maintain and rehabilitate the stormwater infrastructure.
