[ARCHIVED] Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Events Planned in Hollywood

MLK Basketball Tournament
The Parks and Recreation Department will host the second annual MLK Basketball Tournament on Saturday, January 17 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2400 Charleston Street, Hollywood. 45 teams have been formed with 500-600 school-aged children from all over South Florida. The tournament begins at 8:45 a.m. Teams will compete in full-regulation games with each team guaranteed to play at least three games. The winning teams move on to bracket play where they will compete in 5-6 additional games to determine the Champion. Medals for the MVP, the All-Tournament player, and The Hustle Award will be presented before the Championship Team Trophy is awarded at 4 p.m.

MLK Fun Day
The Annual MLK Fun Day gets started later that afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. The outdoor event is free and open to the public. Family-friendly activities include face painting, bounce houses, carnival-style games, music and fun for everyone.

MLK Concert in the ArtsPark at Young Circle
featuring Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr.
Join in the Hollywood MLK celebration as “America’s Got Talent” winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. salutes Sinatra with his Big Band on Saturday, January 17, at the ArtsPark at Young Circle, Hollywood Boulevard & US-1. The concert gets underway at 8:00 p.m. with a performance of the Broward College Jazz Combo under the direction of Prof. Jason Hainsworth, playing classics by legends such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and more. Then at 9 p.m. Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. takes the stage with his Big Band. Lawn seating. Bring a blanket or beach chair. Free admission.

MLK Memorial Service
On Sunday morning, January 18, an MLK Memorial Service will be held at 8:00 a.m. at Attucks Middle School, 3500 North 22nd Avenue in Hollywood. The service will celebrate Dr. King through music and song.

A Day of Service
The Greater Hollywood YMCA has partnered with Global Village Impact, Inc.; Liberia Economic and Social Development, Inc.; and the City of Hollywood, to give back and improve the homes of seniors in the Liberia neighborhood of Hollywood.

On the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, January 19, volunteers will come together to renovate the exterior of three seniors’ homes in the Liberia community. The volunteers will do painting, landscaping, and general light repairs to the exterior of each of the homes.

YMCAs throughout Broward and Miami-Dade counties will honor Dr. King’s community spirit by hosting YMCA MLK Day of Service projects sponsored by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). The Y and FPL invite the community to gather at 8 sites throughout the counties where they can take part in service projects and give back to their community. It’s an opportunity to make a difference and Stand for Something.
