The University Station project is moving along with construction of the mixed-use development. This Public Private Partnership (P3) project was approved by the City Commission in October 2022, and calls for a mixed-use development comprised of residential, commercial, educational and public parking uses. The project developer is requesting a site-specific designation as part of the State of Florida’s Brownfield Redevelopment Program.
Residents may recall a few months ago when the city requested to designation the Regional Activity Center as a Brownfield. Today, the developer still believes it is beneficial to do a site-specific designation of this property only.
At this time no contamination or environmental concerns have been identified, however historical records show a laundry mat and fire station (with underground storage tanks) were located here in the past.
Due to the “perceived” contamination the developer is seeking to add an additional layer of funding by designating this property only as a brownfield; to be known as the “University Station Green Reuse Area”.
In anticipation of the upcoming required community outreach meetings and city commission meetings, staff will be sending out a courtesy email to those members of the public who previously expressed an interested in brownfield designations.
Again, the City is NOT requesting any type of designation of the Regional Activity Center or privately owned property, at an upcoming meeting the City Commission will consider a site-specific brownfield designation for City-owned property located at 309 and 421 N. 21st Avenue and 2031 Polk Street. This site-specific designation is for the property associated with the project known as “University Station” only.
A community meeting to discuss the designation is tentatively planned for Wednesday, September 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center, 2030 Polk Street in downtown Hollywood. Once confirmed, the meeting details will be added to the City’s website calendar of events at www.HollywoodFL.org.
