The City of Hollywood is sensitive to the residents’ needs regarding their children’s education. The City is aware of recent social media posts and other messaging containing representations attributed to the City as to the opening of the Bet Midrash school. In this regard, City staff has been and continues to expedite the requested zoning approvals and permit applications necessary for the safe opening of the school. These approvals are necessary to comply with applicable law to protect the health, safety and welfare of those entering and occupying the building, including your children. On August 21, 2023, the City’s Chief Building Official determined that the school failed to have the required permits and inspections to safely allow it to open, and as a result, the property was “red tagged,” meaning that notice was posted at each entrance indicating that the property is unsafe for occupancy. When the Chief Building Official went to the property on Monday, August 28, he discovered that the red tags had been removed and that there were staff, parents and children inside of and waiting to go inside of the facility. As a result, the building was evacuated and again, red tags were posted due to the continued unsafe condition of the property.
The City does not know when the school will complete the approval requirements and be able to open. It is our hope to resolve this matter as quickly as possible in accordance with applicable law. Based on this information, residents are encouraged to take action in their best interests regarding their children’s education and the use of any vouchers for payment. Thank you.
