Emergency construction is taking place at the Southern Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility in east Hollywood. To perform this work, which involves replacing over 500 linear feet of 48-inch pipe, it is necessary to lower the water table. Groundwater is now being pumped out of the work zone to retention areas and the stormwater drainage system surrounding the facility. This is a normal process known as dewatering, which is set to continue for the next 3-4 weeks.
Residents in the area of N. 14th Avenue to N 16th Court from Arthur Street to Harding Street and along 14th Avenue from Harding Street north to Thomas Street may notice elevated water levels in swales and storm drains, and low-level ponding in alleyways, streets, and/or parking lots. This is an expected occurrence. While the dewatering process continues, residents are asked to avoid driving or wading through standing groundwater. The Utilities Department is exploring an alternative dewatering configuration to reduce the amount of water ponding in these areas.
