The City of Hollywood remains in a Hurricane Watch, Storm Surge Watch and Tropical Storm Warning. The center of Nicole will approach the northwestern parts of the Bahamas this morning, move over the islands by midday, and approach the east coast of Florida within the hurricane warning area tonight. Nicole’s center is then forecasted to turn northwestward and move across Central and North Florida Thursday and Thursday night. Maximum sustained winds have increased since the last briefing and is expected to become a hurricane today. Nicole is a large tropical storm, with tropical storm force winds extending outward up to 460 miles from center. North wind gusts will increase throughout the day 20-30 mph, with gusts of 40 MPH possible. Some thunderstorms will produce heavy rainfall in our area.
Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to trusted news providers like the US National Weather Service Miami Florida and the NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center for the latest information on this system and take any needed preparations to be storm ready. Those who live in low-lying areas in the eastern portions of Hollywood, or those who reside in a dwelling at an elevated risk of flooding should consider seeking alternative shelter until after the storm passes.
Declaration of State of Emergency- Tropical Storm Nicole

Garbage and Recycling Collection Information
Residents should refrain from cutting trees or doing additional landscaping projects until after this storm passes. Sanitation collections will continue on a regular collection schedule until further notice. Property owners are asked to secure garbage and recycling carts immediately after collection and for the duration of the storm. Bulk and Yard Waste Collections Suspended
Bulk Waste collections are postponed today impacting customers in Zone 6 (Hollywood Boulevard to Moffit Street from S 14th Avenue to Surf Road). Bulk items should be secured at this time. A collection day for impacted customers will be determined once the storm passes. At this time, bulk collections are expected to resume on a normal collection schedule on Thursday. Parking Fees Suspended in City-operated Downtown Garages Only
To assist Hollywood residents who live in low-lying areas, from 5:00 p.m. today (Wednesday, November 9th) to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 10th, parking fees will be waived in the two City-operated downtown Hollywood garages only. Hollywood residents can park their personal vehicles in the downtown garages on a first come, first served basis. Proof of Hollywood residency will be required. No commercial trucks or fleet vehicles will be allowed. All vehicles must be parked legally in marked spaces. Any vehicles parked illegally or blocking other vehicles will be ticketed and could be towed. The downtown Hollywood parking garages are located here:
- Van Buren Garage - 251 S 20th Ave
- Radius Garage - 251 N 19th Ave
Vehicles must be removed by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 10th to avoid incurring standard parking rate fees. Parking fees remain in effect for both City-operated garages on Hollywood Beach. The Garfield Street and Nebraska Street garages are not included in this temporary parking fee suspension due to street-level flooding on the barrier island.
Storm Drain Information
While utilities crews continue to check and clear storm drains, residents who are able can assist by ensuring that storm drains near their homes remain cleared throughout the week.
Events and Meetings Reinstated
Please be sure to view the online Event Calendar as previously cancelled events and meetings have been reinstated, including the in-person Veterans Day Barbecue on Friday and Beach Sweep on Saturday.
City Athletic Fields Closed
City of Hollywood Athletic Fields will be closed on Wednesday evening, all sports groups have been notified.
Sun Shuttle Suspended
Sun Shuttle services will be suspended today. Services will resume on Thursday, weather permitting.
TriRail To Suspend Service
Tri-Rail service for Wednesday will end with train P630 as the last northbound (departing Miami Airport Station at 3:10 p.m. and arriving at Mangonia Park Station at 5:10 p.m.) and P637 as the last southbound (departing Mangonia Park Station at 4:25 p.m. and arriving at Miami Airport Station at 6:27 p.m.) to allow time to secure the corridor safely before the storm’s anticipated landfall in the evening. Service will remain suspended on Thursday to allow time to inspect the corridor after the storm’s departure, and begin the recovery work to restore service for Friday.
Broward County Public Schools Closed on Thursday
For the safety of students, families and staff, schools and District offices will be closed again on Thursday, November 10th due to Hurricane Nicole. All before and after-school activities are canceled, including field trips and night classes. Aftercare will not be available, including at City of Hollywood community centers.

Flood Safety Information
- Motorists should not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Floodwaters can damage your vehicle and prevent you from seeing safety hazards in the roadway.
- Public Works crews have deployed barricades and flood safety signage as a precautionary measure along State Road A1A on Hollywood Beach and in parts of Hollywood Lakes (North and South Lake, areas near the Intracoastal Waterway.) If possible, avoid driving in these low-lying areas. When these roadways become inundated, it is very difficult to see the roadway to distinguish it from the Lake or Intracoastal, and maintain control of the vehicle to safely navigate passage.
- Use caution with electrical appliances, electrical cords and outlets if floodwaters have entered your home.
- Residents should not go outside or wade in standing flood water, which can contain contaminants. Following a heavy storm, sharp debris and other items from overturned garbage bins could be hidden in the water and cause injury. Standing water also may contain harmful bacteria that could cause infection.
- Health officials remind the public to not let children or pets play in flood water.
- Call 911 if flood damage to your home has created an emergency situation such as a fire, however do not call 911 to report street-level flooding. 911 is for emergencies only.
- Residents should have their homeowner’s insurance information and flood insurance information readily available. If you experience flood damage, seek advice from your insurer on documenting the damage and drying out your home. The same applies for contacting your vehicle insurance provider if you find your vehicle has been damaged

Sign up for Alert Hollywood today. After you submit your information, you will receive Alert Hollywood notifications whenever an alert is issued. Alerts may be received by phone and/or email address. Severe weather alerts issued by the National Weather Service are automatically issued through the Alert Hollywood system if you elect to receive those notifications.
