In 2018, the Hollywood City Commission created a Taskforce to provide recommendations on a Dune Master Plan for Hollywood Beach. The Taskforce members represent barrier island residents and business owners, as well as hotel and restaurant operators. Moffat & Nichol, a consultant hired by the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency, prepared a conceptual plan, which the Taskforce members have reviewed over the last year. The consultant’s presentation included identification of specific zones along Hollywood’s beachfront and a proposal for various dune types for potential installation.
In their review of the draft plan, the Taskforce has been adamant that no dune installation should occur unless existing dunes are brought back to their original templates and an ongoing maintenance schedule is adopted. The Taskforce members have proposed the following preliminary recommendations:
a) Establish and fund a maintenance program for existing dunes including restoration and remediation
b) Install new resilient dunes, planted at grade, at the street ends at Harding, Connecticut, Fillmore and Jackson, as recommended by staff
c) Evaluate any other new dune installations by reconvening a Taskforce every three years to measure progress of the program.
On June 25, 2019, the Taskforce will hold a community input meeting from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Beach Community Center, 1301 S Ocean Drive. A brief presentation will be followed by an comment and question session. Free parking will be provided. All are encouraged to attend.
